May through October
-- located on Piscataway Creek, across the Potomac River
in the scenic viewshed of Mount Vernon --
Piscataway
Creek is a tributary of the Potomac River, situated across
the river from Mount Vernon in Mount Vernon's protected viewshed.
The creek is surrounded by parklands in the shadow of historic
Fort Washington. This scenic tributary is remarkably unchanged
from the days when it was a major center of coastal Indian
culture. It's rich in marshland, riparian islands and quiet
beaches.
The
Kayak Center is the perfect location for beginner kayakers
with its protected, calm waters. It also offers a surprising
diversity of scenery to explore as part of a tour or by using
one of our rental kayaks. The Center offers beverages and
snacks, clean bathrooms and hot showers, and a retail shop
stocked with paddling gear, including life vests, paddles,
eye glass straps, dry bags, sunscreen and last-minute paddling
items. There's also a great marina restaurant and bar for
after paddling!
Directions:
Take Indian Head Highway South (Rt. 210) from the Beltway,
just east of the Wilson Bridge. Continue on Route 210 for
about 5 miles. Turn right on Fort Washington Road, continue
almost to the end, about 3 miles), and turn left on Warburton
Drive just before Fort Washington National Park. (Follow the
signs to the Fort Washington Marina.) Turn left in the parking
lot -- we're on the far left-hand side of the marina. The
center is approximately 20 minutes from Alexandria, and 12
minutes from the beltway.
